Gadolinium (Gd) is a silvery-white metal with ductility, a melting point of 1313°C, a boiling point of 3266°C, and a relative density of 7.9004. Gadolinium is ferromagnetic, and its Curie point is about room temperature (19°C, 66°F). If a piece of gadolinium is placed in ice water and cooled, it will attract a magnet, but after returning to temperature, it will detach from the magnet and fall off. In an environment above the Curie point, gadolinium is the most paramagnetic element.
Gadolinium oxide (Gd2O3), white amorphous or light yellow powder. Gadolinium oxide can be used in many industries. In the glass industry, gadolinium oxide is used as a component of high refractive index glass. When used together with lanthanum, Gadolinium oxide helps to change the vitrification region and improve the thermal stability of the glass. In the nuclear industry, it is used for nuclear reactor control rods, neutron absorption materials in atomic reactors, magnetic bubble materials, intensifying screen materials, etc. Gadolinium oxide can also be used to manufacture capacitors, X-ray intensifying screens, gadolinium gallium garnet materials, ceramics, etc.
Gadolinium and its water-soluble paramagnetic complexes can be used in medicine to enhance the human body's nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) imaging signal; gadolinium oxysulfide can be used as a matrix grid for oscilloscopes and X-ray fluorescent screens with special brightness; gadolinium in gadolinium gallium garnet is an ideal single substrate for bubble memory storage; gadolinium is used as an additive to samarium cobalt magnets and neodymium iron boron magnets to ensure that performance does not change with temperature.
