Rare earth fluorides (also known as rare earth fluorides) are often used as molten salt components (molten salt electrolysis method) or raw materials (calcium thermal reduction method) in the smelting of single or mixed rare earth metals, as additives in the processing and manufacturing of non-ferrous metallurgy, special alloys, lubricants (agents), coatings, welding fluxes, permanent magnetic materials, etc., and as catalysts in organic synthesis.

The preparation of rare earth fluoride can be divided into two categories: wet fluorination and dry fluorination. The wet method is to use the hydroxide, carbonate, chloride, nitrate, sulfate of rare earth to react with hydrofluoric acid or ammonium fluoride to generate rare earth fluoride. The dry fluorination method includes hydrogen fluoride gas and ammonium hydrogen fluoride fluorination method.

The rare earth fluoride market is closely related to the rare earth industry market. In 2012, the total demand for rare earth fluoride was estimated to be about 53 kt, of which 48 kt was in China and 6 kt was abroad. With the deepening and promotion of application research, the total demand for rare earth fluoride should gradually increase.
